Dandruff is a scalp condition that causes itching, redness, and flaking that occurs due to the overproduction of dead skin cells. This condition typically only happens at specific times in life, such as puberty or pregnancy, but, in some cases, dandruff can be an ongoing problem. It is usually not caused by serious medical conditions—weather and nutritional deficiencies are more commonly linked to dandruff. Luckily, dandruff can be banished with the following home remedies:
1. Aloe vera
Aloe vera is an effective anti-dandruff shampoo with antifungal and antimicrobial properties that can be used to treat scalp dryness. It should be diluted in a moisturizing carrier oil, such as jojoba, argan, or almond oil, and applied to the scalp once a day. The mixture can also be used as a leave-in conditioner applied once a day.
2. Coconut oil
Coconut oil is an excellent moisturizer for the scalp and has antifungal properties. To relieve scalp dryness, apply a few teaspoons of coconut oil to the scalp and massage it in well. Coconut oil should be allowed to sit on the scalp overnight before washing off with a mild shampoo in the morning. Coconut oil can additionally be used as a leave-in conditioner once or twice per week.
3. Vinegar rinse
Vinegar rinses are effective remedies for dandruff because they are anti-bacterial, antifungal, and antimicrobial, and help kill the fungus that causes skin itchiness. Vinegar rinses should be applied to the scalp every day for three weeks for optimal results.
4. Olive oil
Olive oil is known for its skin-soothing properties and can be applied directly to the scalp to relieve itchiness. The oil should be diluted in a moisturizing carrier oil, such as jojoba, argan, or almond oil, and applied to the scalp once a day.
5. Tea tree oil
Tea tree oil has antifungal, antimicrobial, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory properties. It effectively treats several skin diseases, including flaking and acne. Apply a few drops of tea tree oil to the scalp daily for treatment. Tea tree oil can be diluted in a carrier oil such as coconut or almond oil to avoid side effects. The mixture can also be used as a leave-in conditioner applied once a day.
6. Baking soda
Baking soda is a practical home remedy for dandruff. Mix one tablespoon of baking soda in one cup of water and apply the mixture to the scalp with your fingers. Leave the mixture on the scalp for at least 15 minutes before rinsing it off. Repeat this process once a week to relieve the scalp.
7. Medicated shampoos
Medicated shampoos are the most popular treatment for dandruff flaking. Medicated shampoos contain ingredients like zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide, ketoconazole, and tar extract, which are effective for treating the scalp. Medicated shampoos should be used once or twice a month to maintain healthy hair and scalp.
8. Scalp massage
To relieve the scalp, massage it with a weak salt water solution at least twice per week. The scalp should be massaged gently with your fingers and the saline should be washed off the next day to avoid drying out the skin.
9. Exercise
Exercise helps keep the skin healthy and removes toxins from the body, which can help prevent the onset of dryness and itchiness on the scalp in most cases. Gentle exercises like yoga and pilates can also reduce stress, which can be another factor that causes the onset of this condition in some people.
